Westbourne was the name of a river which ran through Paddington, Bayswater and Hyde Park to eventually join up with the Thames. It was damned up in 1730 by George II to create the Serpentine. The rest of the river lives on as a sewer which runs under Sloane Square station. Westbourne Grove was just a country track near the river until it was developed in the 1850’s.
Thomas Pocock granted leases of 292 to 302 to Elias Cordery, a builder, in 1863. Cordery probably also built Nos. 304-314. C H Blake granted leases for Nos. 316-352 Cordery in 1860
And on the south side, Nos. 305 to 317 (odd) were built by Paul Felthouse, a builder, in 1863. Nos. 319-351 were built by Cordery in 1863 under leases from Pocock. (Nos. 347 351 have been demolished.)
